Something I’ve been wanting to try….

Minimalism or being a Minimalist is something I’ve always wanted to try, getting rid of things we no longer use or thing’s that don’t bring us any happiness and just sit on a shelf, stuffed in a cupboard or in the bottom of a toy box.
Minimalism isn’t about just throwing all your belongs away that don’t have a meaning, need or love it’s also about showing your family what really matters in life and that you don’t need to spend money in order to have a good day out or making a purchase to make you feel happy.

My journey to be more of a minimalist hasn’t really even began yet; I’ve done the first big de-clutter but there is defiantly more to be done and then there’s the making purchases that aren’t really necessary which I’m really guilty of doing possibly on a daily basis.
So for the month of October I’m going to try to lead a more minimal life and when the month is up re-evaluate how it has worked for us as a family. To start I’m going to write down all of our outgoing’s – Mortgage, petrol, bills, going for coffee, lunch out, food shopping (I’m sure you get the idea) and place each outgoing or item I’m going to be de-cluttering into one of these 4 category’s Category 1. Need, category 2. Want, category 3. Love and category 4. get rid/donate/recycle. I feel by doing this not only will I be able to de-clutter the house more effectively but also be able to make more responsible purchases, but being honest sometimes I do feel it is better to spend a little more money on something which is of better quality as in the long run this will be more cost-effective and less wasteful.

I’ve done a quick description of what each category means to me, which I’m hoping will help me decide where my items for de-cluttering belong and money/spending should fall into.
Need for me is something that needs to be paid for or purchased like my mortgage or food shopping. Materialistic wise needs differ for each person, for me personally I need my car but I don’t need to use so much petrol a week as I could catch the bus/walk. Within the house we need clothes but I don’t need the 40+ t/shirts which currently reside in my draw which I probably have not even worn half of them for a good while.
Want I think the want and need category are very similar in meaning as most of the time when I want something I feel like I need it, when really I need to ask myself if I do actually want it and how this item will either benefit my day-to-day life or bring me joy, in many cases I’m sure it’s because I like it and not necessary that I need/want it.
Love is for the times you think to yourself ‘I don’t need to go to the café for a coffee but its something I love/like doing’, ‘I don’t need to buy that bottle of wine but I would really love a glass at the end of the day’ we all need that treat but sometimes I need to budget at the beginning of the month and set aside money for our loves/likes as this way we are more able to limit our spending. When it comes to materialistic things this category also works really well as if you don’t love it….. Which above category does it fit into? If none then why are you holding onto the item?
Get rid/donate/recycle is mainly for de-cluttering as if it doesn’t fit into one of the above categories it must fall into this one. If the item is broken and not fixable then its to either get rid or recycle. If some of my 40+ t/shirts can be either donated or recycled which they can be then this is what im going to be doing.

Donating or recycling unwanted clothes is always better than just throwing away in your normal household trash as it always has to go somewhere and that somewhere is normally a landfill, nylon clothes take 30-40 years to decompose which is an extremely long time for it to be sat in a landfill. Donating when possible is a great option to consider as there is always someone who can benefit from an unwanted item of clothing or an old piece of furniture.

For myself and my family I’m hoping by trying to live a simpler life it will cut down on the clutter in the house meaning less time spent cleaning and more time being spent doing the things we enjoy doing as a family. By stepping back before making a purchase and actually asking myself if I really do need it I will be able to save more money, again for doing things together as a family.
